Lecture on Austin's Church of the Atonement

Sunday 23 April 2023

Austin’s Heritage Committee invites you to a lecture (in French) by Serge Wagner.

In 1860, in the territory of Austin (Bolton Township), there are 3 competing Protestant movements: Wesleyan Methodists, New Connection Methodists and Anglicans. In 1865 at Peasley’s Corner (now Austin’s centre), the Rev. John Godden leads the Anglican offensive by building a temple that reflects Anglican values. Meanwhile, the New Connection Methodists build their own church! This religious conflict was also mirrored by a conflict between the hamlets of Bolton.

  • We will talk about the three competing currents, with emphasis on the Atonement church that has survived to this day.
  • Over a period of 62 years, the church repeatedly faced closure and even demolition.
  • Finally, the Catholic church won out against all three Protestant currents!

The lecture will also feature a presentation of the church’s interior and exterior architecture.

When? Sunday, 23 April at 2 p.m.

Where? At the church (1, Millington Rd.)
